Victim Sustains Leg Injury in Terrifying Incident at Rockaway Beach |
A woman is fighting for her life after a harrowing shark attack occurred on Monday at Rockaway Beach, a beloved Atlantic coast hotspot in New York City. The 50-year-old victim, who suffered a severe leg injury from the attack, is currently in critical condition at a local hospital, according to officials.
The alarming incident took place around 5:49 p.m. at the 59th Street section of the water, as confirmed by the New York Police Department's public information office. Emergency responders swiftly arrived at the scene, and the victim was rushed to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where she remains in critical condition.
The Department of Parks and Recreation for the city revealed that the victim, a seasoned swimmer, sustained a shark bite on her left leg. In response to the attack, lifeguards swiftly cleared the beach while police conducted an aerial search for the elusive shark, though their efforts yielded no success.
As a result of this shocking event, Rockaway Beach will experience a delayed opening on Tuesday, with a tentative start time of 11 a.m. This measure aims to ensure the safety of beachgoers as authorities diligently monitor the area for any potential shark presence.
"We extend our heartfelt wishes for a swift and complete recovery for the injured swimmer," expressed the parks department. In light of the incident, they also underscored the rarity of shark bites at Rockaway Beach, emphasizing that such occurrences are extremely uncommon.
It is important to note that this incident comes on the heels of several reported shark attacks in nearby waters over the past month. These attacks were documented northeast of Rockaway, in areas such as Fire Island, Quogue, and Babylon, New York.
Marine experts at the Florida Museum's International Shark Attack File have highlighted the presence of sand tiger sharks, a species that can grow up to 10 feet in length, along the Long Island surf line this summer. They speculate that the sharks are attracted to the bays and baitfish along the Long Island coast.
Recent statistics from the file also revealed that in 2022, New York state reported eight shark attacks, contributing to a total of 20 recorded since 1837. While these occurrences remain rare, authorities and experts remain vigilant in their efforts to ensure public safety along the bustling New York City shoreline.
